Just arrived in Shanghai this morning, after getting the night train from Beijing.

It was a great journey, one of the comfiest yet. Re-cap, I arrived late in Beijing on Saturday evening, where I hooked up with Olivia and the tour finished yesterday. We spent the afternoon walking to Tiananmen Square and the Beihai park (memo to oneself, Beijing always looks smaller on a map...) and we met up with Ma Yi to pick up the train tickets.

Once we have arranged accommodation in Shanghai, we'll check the place out today before heading out to some villages, named the "Chinese Venice" around two hours away.

I'm really fascinated to be in Shanghai, with all the history in terms of the concessions, the crazy lifestyle of the 1930s, followed by the rise of both the nationalists and the communists. Quite a place for ferment it would seem. Impressions so far are good, but it is damn hot - oh for some coolish Lhasa weather :)
A shorter blog this morning as we are both about to die from heat exhaustion - its that hot: oh for a room with air-conditioning!!
More to follow (in Shanghai and environs until Thursday).
