Yangshuo - July 29 2007

Technically this is today's update, but since electricity problems prevented yesterday's posting I have the impression I am continually typing (probably a correct one for those having suffered email abuse from me...).

The cooking course was great fun this afternoon. There was a group of 6 of us, one Belgian woman from Leuven (I think Belgium has departed en masse - well its 10m worth - to China this summer!) and a family from London. The setting for the cooking school was very beautiful: in the countryside, surrounded by the karst limestone hills. Very impressive. We cooked three courses (don't worry Brussels' folk - I have a recipe book...), including beer fish. Normally, I am not a big fan of fish, but I must say this was quite tasty.

We also did a chicken, pepper and cashew nut plate (again very good) and the boiled veg option I feel I have lived off for quite a long time! Oh, and the egg plant with pork, again not bad - and into in the bargain, easy to cook (how I may regret posting this...)!

Our local guide and cook expert was excellent. She has a great sense of humour - and will have a name once I check again tomorrow morning! She was also very organised in her control of the group, something required in my case as I easily forgot the order of the ingredients!

Tomorrow is cooking in the morning, and relieved to learn that we have a different menu: while it was very good, cooking the same thing twice in 48 hours could get tedious! In the afternoon I shall go bamboo rafting down some local river (not white water rafting - I doubt there is enough of the stuff) and then later on to an artistic performance by the main River Li in the evening! I am very much looking forward to it.

This evening I sampled the local beer in a couple of bars, met some Chinese, helped them practise their English (oh dear, they are learning from me...) and am now back at the hotel planning on an early night given the hectic plan for tomorrow!

More to follow,

Rob
